AI Overtakes Ransomware as Top Cybersecurity Threat, New Report Finds
- AI is now the top cybersecurity concern for security and IT leaders.
- Arctic Wolf’s 2025 Trends Report shows the shift.
- Attackers are using machine learning and automation in new ways.
- Organizations are urged to strengthen defenses against AI-driven threats.
AI tops the worry list
A new report from security firm Arctic Wolf shows a clear change in what keeps security leaders up at night. For the first time, AI, large language models and the privacy concerns that come with them ranked as the leading cybersecurity concern, cited by 29% of security and IT leaders. Ransomware, malware and data extortion fell to second at 21%. The survey covered more than 1,200 senior IT and security decision-makers in 15 countries.
How attackers use AI
The Arctic Wolf 2025 Trends Report describes how AI, once seen mainly as a defensive tool, is now being turned against defenders. Attackers use it to automate and scale their campaigns, making them faster and harder to detect, and models that learn from defenders’ behavior can adjust tactics almost in real time.
Machine Learning and Automation: The Double-Edged Sword
AI and machine learning have transformed many fields. The same strengths that drive innovation also help criminals. Machine learning is showing up in phishing, social engineering and deepfakes, and that sophistication lets attacks slip past traditional defenses.

What it means for businesses
The findings are a wake-up call. AI can help attackers get around even strong defenses, and organizations will need to build AI-driven detection and response into their security architecture to keep up.
Changing Role of Cybersecurity Professionals
Security jobs are changing too. Professionals need continuous training and modern tools to keep pace, and people working alongside AI will be central to strong defenses.
Rethinking defenses
Companies should reassess their security strategies with AI threats in mind. Security programs that use AI-driven analytics and better intrusion detection can catch attacks earlier. Closer cooperation between technology developers and security specialists matters more than ever.

What the report signals
The Arctic Wolf report makes it clear that AI is reshaping security. Defenders need vigilance and new ideas. Organizations that take AI threats seriously now will be better placed to stop them, and everyone shares responsibility for staying ahead.
