AWS Allies with BSI to Bolster EU’s Cybersecurity Frontlines

What AWS and the BSI signed

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has signed a cooperation agreement with Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The March 2025 deal covers cybersecurity and digital sovereignty in Germany and across the EU, and it ties into the AWS European Sovereign Cloud that AWS is building in Germany.

A national regulator and a cloud giant

The agreement pairs one of Germany’s top security authorities with the world’s largest cloud provider. AWS and BSI say they will work on cloud security standards and validation processes, and AWS gets a formal way to work with a national regulator on how its services are secured.

Three goals

The agreement lists three goals:

• Safer cloud services: The partners will work on the security of AWS’s cloud services so that organizations running on that infrastructure are better protected.
• More security know-how: AWS and BSI plan joint work to spread practical security knowledge among the people who use and run cloud systems.
• Innovation and digital sovereignty: The work is meant to support new technology while keeping data handling in line with the interests of EU member states.

What digital sovereignty means here

Digital sovereignty means giving countries and organizations more control over their data and digital resources. Under the agreement, AWS and BSI will look at frameworks that respect EU data protection rules without blocking new technology.

Effect on regional security rules

The focus on sovereignty could change how security rules are applied in the region. Data integrity and control over where data lives are central to that debate.
