Gold Gains Glitter: Outshining Bitcoin in Rapid Asset Surge

Summary

Investors pick the older safe haven

Gold is back in favor, and for now it is outshining Bitcoin. Investors who have spent years debating whether Bitcoin is “digital gold” are, in this round of market turmoil, buying the real thing. Interest in crypto hasn’t disappeared, but it has taken a back seat while investors move money toward the asset with the longer history.

Gold’s return as a safe haven

Gold has served as a safe haven through many financial crises. Its appeal tends to rise when markets swing, when geopolitical tension builds and when the economic outlook darkens. All three are present now, and gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have seen inflows that outpace those into Bitcoin funds.

Analysts point to gold’s role as a hedge against inflation. When investors doubt the economy, they tend to go back to an asset that has held value for centuries. In recent months that pattern has played out again.

Bitcoin and the “digital gold” debate

Bitcoin’s supporters call it “digital gold.” It has attracted a new generation of investors with its decentralized design and the chance of outsized returns. The swings scare people off. Bitcoin has dropped 20 percent in a week many times. Gold rarely moves that fast.

Bitcoin keeps a loyal following, and institutional interest is growing. But next to gold it still looks speculative to many investors. Billionaire hedge fund manager John Paulson, for one, has called cryptocurrencies a bubble that will eventually prove worthless.

Mixing gold and crypto in a portfolio

Many investors are splitting the difference, on the theory that a portfolio holding both traditional and digital assets can hold up whether inflation, recession or a crypto rally comes next.

Financial advisers warn against putting everything into one asset class. Holding gold as a hedge while keeping a smaller stake in Bitcoin offers some protection and some upside.

Decentralized finance is also growing quickly, and investors who hold crypto need to keep up with how those markets change. Gold’s stability balances some of that risk.

What to watch

For now, gold is winning the contest for nervous money, while Bitcoin still draws investors looking for growth. A mix of the two is one way to handle uncertain markets.

Fund flows can reverse quickly. Investors weighing either asset should look at their time horizon and how much volatility they can stomach, rather than chasing whichever one led last month.
