Blue team work is the defensive side of security: monitoring, detection, triage, incident response and threat hunting, usually inside a security operations center (SOC). If you want the concept first, read red team vs blue team and our explainer on blue teaming. This guide covers the certifications defenders use to prove those skills.
We compare four: CompTIA CySA+, GIAC GCIA, Blue Team Level 1 (BTL1) and Microsoft SC-200. They test different things. CySA+ is a vendor-neutral analyst exam. GCIA goes deep on network traffic and intrusion detection. BTL1 is a 24-hour hands-on incident response exam. SC-200 proves you can run Microsoft Sentinel and Defender XDR.

Short answer: for a junior SOC job, BTL1 or CySA+ (BTL1 if you want hands-on proof with no experience requirement, CySA+ if the posting or a DoD role names it). Add SC-200 if your employer runs Microsoft security tools. GCIA fits analysts who already know TCP/IP and want to specialize in network detection, usually with employer-funded SANS training.

CompTIA CySA+: the vendor-neutral analyst exam
CySA+ validates the ability to detect, analyze and respond to threats in security operations and vulnerability management roles. V4 (CS0-004) launched June 23, 2026, with a maximum of 85 questions in 165 minutes and a passing score of 750 on a 100 to 900 scale. CompTIA recommends about four years in a SOC analyst or vulnerability analyst role (CompTIA).
V4 domain weights:
- Security operations (34%)
- Vulnerability management (26%)
- Incident response and management (24%)
- Reporting and communication (16%)
V3 or V4? CompTIA says the English V3 exam (CS0-003) retires December 22, 2026, and Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish versions retire March 23, 2027 (CompTIA). If you are not booked to sit V3 before late December, study for V4. CompTIA lists V3 for DoD 8140 work roles including cyber defense analyst, cyber defense incident responder and vulnerability assessment analyst (CompTIA V3).
Our CySA+ study guide has an 8-week plan, and Security+ vs CySA+ covers which to take first.
GIAC GCIA: network intrusion analysis
GIAC says GCIA validates “knowledge of network and host monitoring, traffic analysis, and intrusion detection,” including configuring and monitoring IDS and reading network traffic and log files (GIAC). The exam covers three areas:
- Fundamentals of traffic analysis and application protocols
- Open-source intrusion detection systems: Snort and Zeek
- Network traffic forensics and monitoring
The exam has 106 questions in 4 hours, with a 67% passing score for versions released on or after January 21, 2023. It uses GIAC’s CyberLive format, which puts hands-on tasks in lab environments alongside standard questions. GIAC lists the target audience as intrusion detection practitioners, security and system analysts, network engineers and administrators, and hands-on security managers.
The matching SANS course is SEC503: Network Monitoring and Threat Detection In-Depth, six days instructor-led, which SANS says is built around the GCIA objectives with 37 hands-on labs. In DoD 8140 Qualification Matrix V2.1, GCIA is listed at the Advanced level for work role 531, Cyber Defense Incident Responder, alongside CySA+ (see our incident response certifications guide and the DoD 8140 Document Library).
Blue Team Level 1 (BTL1): hands-on and junior-friendly
BTL1 comes from Security Blue Team, which now trades as Centri (Security Team Training Ltd); the old securityblue.team address redirects to centri.org. Centri pitches BTL1 at junior defenders and lists 0 to 2 years as the recommended experience. There are no entry requirements for the exam (Centri).
The course is split into security fundamentals, phishing analysis, threat intelligence, digital forensics, SIEM and incident response. Tools named on the course page include Splunk, Wireshark, Volatility, FTK Imager, KAPE, DeepBlueCLI, Sigma, MISP, OpenCTI, TheHive and CyberChef. Centri says the package includes four months of course access, browser labs, one 24-hour practical incident response exam and one resit. Passing earns lifetime certification, with no renewal requirement.
Centri maps the course to the NICE Framework Cyber Defense Analyst role. If you are aiming at a DoD position, check the work role in the DoD 8140 matrix before relying on BTL1 alone.
Microsoft SC-200: Security Operations Analyst Associate
SC-200 earns the Microsoft Certified: Security Operations Analyst Associate credential. Microsoft describes the candidate as an analyst who “reduces organizational risk by performing triage, responding to incidents, hunting for threats, and engineering detections,” using Microsoft Defender XDR, Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Purview and Defender for Cloud workload protections, and hunting with KQL (Microsoft Learn).
The exam lasts 100 minutes, is proctored, may include interactive components, and needs a score of 700 or greater to pass. Skills measured as of October 21, 2026 (study guide):
- Manage a security operations environment (40 to 45%)
- Respond to security incidents (35 to 40%)
- Perform threat hunting (20 to 25%)
The credential expires every 12 months. Microsoft renews it through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn (Microsoft). The exam is offered in ten languages, including English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese (Brazil). Our SC-200 exam guide goes deeper on KQL and Sentinel prep.
Which blue team certification to take first
- No security job yet: get the foundations first. Our beginner IT security certifications guide compares ISC2 CC and Security+. Then BTL1 for hands-on proof.
- Junior SOC analyst: BTL1 or CySA+. If you have Security+ and a DoD or government role, CySA+ is the usual next step.
- Your SOC runs Microsoft Sentinel or Defender XDR: SC-200, alongside one of the above.
- Network detection specialist: GCIA, ideally with SEC503 paid by your employer.
- Moving into incident handling or forensics: see incident response certifications (GCIH, ECIH) and digital forensics certifications (GCFA, GCFE).
Our cybersecurity certification path and map shows where each of these sits by domain and level, and the DoD 8140 certifications guide explains how DoD work roles and levels work.
Who pays for blue team certifications
Ask your manager before you buy; GIAC and Centri both publish letters you can use to make the case. Prices vary by country and change, so check the official pages:
- CySA+: vouchers and CertMaster bundles are sold from the CySA+ V4 page.
