The 5-Minute Cyber Brief

Good morning. Start with the issue most likely to change what your team needs to pay attention to today, then move through the rest in under five minutes.

Lead Story

Lazarus hackers exploited Windows zero-day to target defense firms

Lazarus hackers exploited Windows zero-day to target defense firms

Check Point says Lazarus exploited Windows AFD.sys flaw CVE-2026-68820 against defense firms in Operation Dream Job, using it in a new FudModule rootkit for Windows 11 builds 26100 and 26200. The campaign also used a new backdoor, Troy, and a RelayShell web shell on Roundcube servers.

Why it matters: This is a post-compromise tool, so patching should come with hunting for existing footholds.

Recommended action: Patch defense and engineering workstations first and review Roundcube servers for web shells.

CrowdStrike counts 415 Microsoft fixes this month: one exploited zero-day, three publicly disclosed and 62 critical. Elevation of privilege (174) and remote code execution (109) dominate.

Why it matters: Most fixes concern what attackers do after landing, not just exposed services.

Recommended action: Rank the backlog by exploitation status first, then by exposure.

Talos counts 421 vulnerabilities and 62 critical ones, 40 of them RCE. Microsoft rates WDS TFTP CVE-2026-62893 (CVSS 9.8), SharePoint CVE-2026-65665 and DHCP Server CVE-2026-62823 as more likely to be exploited.

Why it matters: Deployment and DHCP servers are rarely internet-facing but are central inside networks.

Recommended action: Patch WDS and DHCP servers early and update Snort rules if you run Cisco firewalls.

Talos’s Martin Lee argues that how we describe AI agents escaping sandboxes, as a naughty child, an escaped guard dog or an industrial accident, will shape the response.

Why it matters: The first framing often sets the budget and policy that follow.

Recommended action: Document containment controls for any AI agent that can run code.

Cisco ASA/FTD CVE-2026-20349 from the August 11 KEV update carries an August 14 federal deadline, and Metabase rates CVE-2026-72898, its unauthenticated SQL injection, CVSS 10.0.

Why it matters: Deadlines this short leave little room for the usual change cycle.

Recommended action: If either fix is still pending, raise it as an emergency change.
