CISSP vs CCSP (2026): Which ISC2 Certification Should You Take?

By Donald Korinchak, MBA, PMP, CISSP, SecurityX, ITILv3   Published: 10/14/26   7 min read

Updated October 8, 2026: A new CCSP exam outline took effect August 1, 2026, adding AI and machine learning topics. The CISSP outline in effect since April 15, 2024 is still current, and ISC2 has not announced a replacement as of this date. Prices below were checked on ISC2’s exam pricing page on this date (ISC2, ISC2).

CISSP and CCSP both come from ISC2, both need five years of experience, and both use the same adaptive exam format. The difference is scope. CISSP is the broad certification for experienced security professionals and leaders. CCSP goes deep on one area: securing cloud data, applications, platforms and operations.

Because they share a membership, one annual fee and an experience shortcut, many people end up with both. This comparison helps you decide which to take first. For full details, see our CISSP guide and CCSP guide.

Many topics overlap: risk, cryptography, identity, secure development, operations and legal issues. CCSP takes each of them into the cloud: shared responsibility, multi-tenancy, cloud data life cycles, container and Kubernetes security, cloud IAM and federation, provider contracts and SLAs, and conflicting international laws. The 2026 CCSP outline also added subdomains on AI and machine learning, including protecting training data and models.

The experience shortcut

This is the biggest practical link between the two. ISC2 says an active CISSP satisfies the entire CCSP experience requirement (ISC2). Without CISSP, CCSP needs five years of cumulative, full-time IT experience, including three in information security and one in at least one CCSP domain. A relevant degree or the Cloud Security Alliance’s CCSK can waive one year.

CISSP needs five years in two or more of its eight domains, and a relevant degree or a credential on ISC2’s approved list can satisfy one year. For either exam, if you pass without enough experience, you become an Associate of ISC2 and have six years to earn it (ISC2).

ISC2’s single annual fee makes the second certification cheap to keep. You pay $135 a year whether you hold one ISC2 certification or several ($50 if you only hold CC, or as an Associate).

Difficulty

Both are hard, experience-based exams, and neither is simply “easier.” CISSP’s challenge is breadth: eight domains and questions that test management judgment. CCSP’s challenge is depth in cloud: if you haven’t designed or operated cloud environments, questions on data life cycles, cloud forensics or provider contracts can be tough. If you pass CISSP first, CCSP may feel more focused; if you work in cloud every day, CCSP may feel more natural. For tips on the adaptive format both use, see what to expect on the CISSP adaptive exam.

Salary: what the data says

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t publish pay by certification. Its closest profiles show a May 2025 median of $129,180 for information security analysts, $134,050 for computer network architects and $175,140 for computer and information systems managers (BLS, BLS, BLS).

Skillsoft’s claim (2024 survey): in its IT Skills and Salary survey (May to September 2024), U.S. respondents with CCSP reported an average salary of $171,524, and those with CISSP $168,060. These are self-reported averages, not adjusted for location or role (Skillsoft). See our certification salary guide for more context.

Frequently asked questions

Should I get CISSP or CCSP first?

CISSP first suits most people, because an active CISSP satisfies the entire CCSP experience requirement and CISSP covers broader ground. If your work is almost all cloud security, CCSP first is reasonable.

Is CCSP easier than CISSP?

Not simply. CCSP covers six domains instead of eight but goes deeper into cloud. Both are 3-hour adaptive exams with 100 to 150 items and a passing score of 700 out of 1000.

How much do CISSP and CCSP cost?

The CISSP exam is $749 and the CCSP exam is $599 in the US, as of October 8, 2026. ISC2 also sells a CISSP Peace of Mind bundle with one retake for $998 in the U.S. ISC2 charges a single $135 annual maintenance fee no matter how many ISC2 certifications you hold.

Does CISSP count toward CCSP experience?

Yes. ISC2 says an active CISSP substitutes for the entire CCSP experience requirement.

How many CPE credits do CISSP and CCSP need?

CISSP needs 120 CPE credits every three years and CCSP needs 90 CPE credits every three years.

Which pays more, CCSP or CISSP?

In Skillsoft’s 2024 survey, U.S. CCSP holders reported an average of $171,524 and CISSP holders $168,060. BLS doesn’t track pay by certification.

Do CISSP and CCSP count for DoD 8140?

Yes. In Qualification Matrix V2.1, CISSP is an Advanced option for 10 work roles. CCSP is Advanced for 7 roles, including 441 and 451, and Intermediate for 7 more, including 531 and 722.
