The Google Cybersecurity Certificate is a course, not an exam. Nobody proctors you. You earn it by working through Google-designed courses on Coursera and passing their graded assignments. That makes it cheap and flexible, and it also shapes what it can and can’t do for your job search.

It’s now a nine-course series: the eight core courses plus an optional course on using AI in your job search, and Google has added AI training to the program (Coursera). Along the way you learn security frameworks, networks, Linux, SQL, Python, SIEM tools and incident response, and you finish with portfolio projects you can show employers.

Can it get you a job on its own?

Sometimes, but don’t plan on it. Many employers still screen for proctored certifications such as Security+, especially for government and contractor roles. What a hiring manager can use from the Google certificate is the portfolio: a packet capture you can walk through, a Python script you wrote, an incident write-up. The PDF itself carries less weight than your ability to talk about the work.

Google knows this. It says the certificate helps prepare you for Security+ and offers a dual credential when you pass both (Google).

On pay, Google and Coursera quote their own figures from Lightcast job-posting data: Google says the median salary for cybersecurity jobs with zero to five years of experience is $120,000 or more, and Coursera lists a median entry-level salary of $112,384 for cybersecurity analysts. Those are vendor figures, not an independent survey. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which has no stake in the program, reports a median pay of $129,180 in May 2025 for information security analysts across all experience levels, with 21% projected growth from 2025 to 2035 (BLS). Entry-level analysts typically earn less than the median, and many start in help desk or SOC roles first.

Who it suits, and who will be bored

Google says no prior experience or degree is required. If you already hold Security+ or work in a SOC, most of this will be review; look at CySA+ or SC-200 instead.

Paying by the month

Example: finishing in six months at $49 a month costs about $294. On Coursera Plus at $399 a year, you pay the same whether you take four months or twelve, and you can use the rest of the catalog.

Six months at seven hours a week, or faster

Coursera estimates about seven hours a week for six months, which is fair for a beginner. Here’s one way to pace it without skipping the parts that matter:

Google Cybersecurity Certificate FAQ

Is the Google Cybersecurity Certificate an exam?

No. It’s a nine-course online program on Coursera. You earn it by completing the courses and their graded assessments, not by passing a proctored exam.

How long does it take?

Coursera estimates about six months at seven hours a week, and Google says three to six months. It’s self-paced, so you can go faster.

What does it cost?

It’s paid through a Coursera subscription. Coursera lists individual programs at $49 to $79 a month and Coursera Plus at $59 a month or $399 a year (September 2026). Financial aid is available.

Will employers accept it instead of Security+?

Some will, especially with strong portfolio projects, but many still look for proctored certifications such as Security+. Pairing the two is the stronger approach, and Google offers graduates a Security+ discount and a dual credential.

What tools does it teach?

Python, Linux, SQL, SIEM tools such as Chronicle and Splunk, the Suricata intrusion detection system, and packet analysis with tcpdump and Wireshark.

Do I need experience?

No. Google says no prior experience or degree is required.
