Just-in-Time Access (JIT)

Just-in-time access, or JIT, is a security approach that grants elevated or sensitive access only when needed and only for a limited period. It matters because standing administrative privileges create persistent attack opportunities even when they are rarely used.

What is Just-in-Time Access (JIT)?

With JIT access, users or administrators request privileged access when required for a specific task, and the system grants it temporarily based on approval, policy, or automation. After the time window expires, the access is removed automatically.

This reduces the amount of always-on privileged access available for attackers to abuse.

What JIT Access Commonly Protects

Common use cases include cloud administration, server management, identity administration, production support, emergency maintenance, and access to highly sensitive business systems.

JIT Access vs. Standing Admin Rights

Standing admin rights remain assigned all the time. JIT access provides elevated rights only for a limited period and usually with stronger policy controls and auditability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is JIT access valuable?

Because it shrinks the window in which privileged credentials or sessions can be misused and improves accountability around high-risk access.

Does JIT access replace PAM?

Not necessarily. JIT access is often delivered as part of a broader privileged access management strategy.
